A love story worth telling multiple times?

Stand Alone
If you want time travel, lady knights, a beautiful love story packaged in a short fantasy stand alone – The Everlasting is here for you! A really unique and interesting book, but with some things I wish were different.
I recently finished reading The Everlasting by Alix E. Harrow and we need to talk about it. I saw so many people loving this book online, and I had to see for myself what all the fuzz was about. And I agree with a lot of it.
What is The Everlasting about
The Everlasting is a stand alone fantasy novel where we get to follow a tragick love story, again and again. The story is set in a different world, but it reminded me a little bit about England during the 1930’s. We get to follow our main character, who is a scholar and also obsessed with this historical character, Sir Una Everlasting, a female knight who saved the whole kingdom about a thousand years ago with her tragic death.
As the story progress, he get’s a secret mission, to go back in time to meet Sir Una, write her history and make sure she dies in the right way so the kingdom actually is saved the way it was. But, when he and Sir Una meet, feelings start to grow and leading her to her death seems more and more horrible.
A beautiful and unique fantasy novel
If you want a fantasy novel that is both short and sweet, this book is perfect because it’s only 300 pages. It’s also written in a very unique way. They are adressing each other through the book, so it’s written to ”you” or ”my love”. There are also chapters from our main characters book included throughout the book. And Sir Unas real name is also never shown since she doesn’t want anyone to know what it is.
One thing I liked about their love story is that they are both described in quite unflattering ways. He is calling himself a coward throughout the book, since he deflected from the war and never stood up for himself. She is considering herself to be a monster, since she has killed so many during her time as a knight. They are both described as not very good looking, he is long and spindly and she is bulky and scarred. They are both unsure how to get closer to each other and that’s quite refreshing to read, in a world where super masculine broody men are the usual MMCs.

WHAT I WISH WAS BETTER WITH THE EVERLASTING (SPOILER FREE)
I enjoyed reading this book, especially the beginning. It felt fresh and interesting but the problem with time travel for me, is that it felt a bit repetative. Even though it’s told from different POV’s and the story is told with different itterations, it still made me a little bored. And when a book of 300 pages suddenly feels long, then I guess something is not really hitting home.
The other thing I felt was a bit lacking was how the time travel and the magic around it was explained. But since the book is supposed to be quite short, I guess there isn’t room for this elaborate explanation of how it all works. And that wasn’t the main focus of the story either. But since I’m a true fantasy reader – I just love good world building and thought this was a little thin.
Should you read The Everlasting by Alix E. Harrow?
I still enjoyed it, and I recommend it, but I’m not completely in love with it like some other I’ve seen rave about it online. But if you’re in the mood for this beutifully written love story, want time travel and an is in your Lady Knight Era, then I deffinitly think you should pick it up. Or, if you’re completely new to fantasy or want to start reading more fantasy instead of romantasy, this is a really good choice.
