The Best Fantasy & Romantasy Books I Read in 2025
READING GUIDE
It’s time for my 2025 reading wrap up! I tell you all about the best fantasy & romantasy books I read 2025. Let me know if you have the same favorite reads from this year or if you found something you want to check out.
The last three books in the Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson
I read Oathbringer, Rhythm of War and Wind and Truth by Brandon Sanderson the first months of 2025, and I loved it. The Stormlight Archive will always be one of my favorite series, and it was such an amazing reading experience.
I just love how Brandon Sandersons brain works, and how he creates one increadable magic system after the other, and also all the characters. I think it’s really interesting to see how he handles topics like mental health, finding your own path and so much more.
The Colony By Annika Norlin
Annika Norlin isn’t just an author, she is also one of my favourite artists. I have listned to her since I was a teenager and know all her songs. So when this book blew up in Sweden, I knew I had to read it. It’s a really unique and atmospheric novel, and the characters stayed with me for so long afterwards.
It’s about a woman who is depressed and burnt out, and decieds to leave society to live off grid in her cabin in the northern swedish woods. She finds a group of people who seem to live even more of the grid, and has created their own rules of life. When she joins the group, things start to spiral from there. A book about the slippery slope of power and group dynamics.
The Fourth Wing Series by Rebecca Yarros
I had heard about Fourth Wing by so many, but didn’t decide to read it before I went on vacation this summer, but I’m so glad I did. I have mostly read fantasy, sci-fi and the occatinal crime novel before, but this unlocked a whole new genre for me. So this has a very special place on my list of the best fantasy & romantasy books I read 2025.
I was completely hooked on the love story, the action, the bonded dragons and everything in this universe. I read all three books in a couple of days and I can’t wait for the fourth one, which I’m so happy that Rebecca is working on right now.
ACOTAR by Sarah J. Maas
Like so many others, I went into ACOTAR to fix my reading slump from Fourth Wing and fell in love again. This series has everything that I love. Amazing characters, banter, yearning and love stories, action, magic and a bigger high fantasy world. I read all five books and I can’t wait for an other one.
Crescent City by Sarah J. Maas
And, no surprises here, I had to also read Crescent City series this year. As a lover of urban fantasy after my teenage obsession with Buffy the Vampire slayer, this fitted me perfectly. Angels, wolf shifters, merpeople and fae in a modern setting with party drugs, cellphones and darker forces. Even this time, the characters, the fizzling love story and the action had me hooked. I liked all three books, but the first one is a masterpiece.
Will of The Many & Strenght of The Few by James Islingtong
An other masterpiece but on the other side of the scale of which kind of fantasy I love to read, is the Hierarchy series by James Islington. I heard about Will of The Many but saved it until the sequel The Strenght of The Few was released and read them in one go. And it was an amazing read.
This is a series with a really complex and intricate high fantasy world, with a magic system like no other. It’s based in a roman inspired society and in the first book we get to follow Vis, who is adopted by a man higher up in the hierachy. He forces him to attend the academy and aslo become his spy. I really enjoyed both the first and the second book.
Within the Circle by Arne Dahl
An other really well written book I read this year is Within the Circle by Arne Dahl, one of Swedens best authors if you ask me. His crime novels are like written like intricate puzzles you have to solve, and each piece is really interesting. So if you want a thriller filled with action, characters you enjoy and a very interesting ending, read it now and thank me later.
